Right now there are 2 formats of HD, blu-ray and HD DVD. These two big camps are currently battling it out for dominance in the market place. So you could invest in blu-ray DVD players only in a short time find out that HD DVD won and your blu-ray player is obsolete or vice versa. Plus, authoring, DVD disks, and DVD burners are very expensive still and the general public hasn't made the switch to high definition at the time of this writing.
